Nacogdoches, TX (KTRE) - Now that the holiday shopping season is in full swing, so are the festivals around East Texas.

Merchants in Downtown Nacogdoches competed today to see who had the best brewed beverage during the wassail fest.

The festival allows visitors to celebrate the spirit of Christmas while shopping and enjoying warm wassail. Shoppers are also able to experience a holiday tradition that was shared by villagers of the midevial times. Wassail is an anglo-saxon term that means "be happy".

Lyric Muckleroy, a merchant of Downtown Nacogdohes told KTRE that "it's been going over for twelve years and the downtown merchants decided that the Saturday after Thanksgiving that we'd have a friendly competition of making wassail to see who would have the best wassail and then all the patrons that would come out today could enjoy it."

Cooks put their own twist on the wassail recipe, but traditionally it's a hot drink made with wine, beer or cider, spices and baked apples.
