LUFKIN, TX(KTRE)- It was a small crowd, but huge and important information is being shared at the Deep East Texas Contracting Opportunities Conference or DETCOC. The Angelina College Procurement Assistance Center is sponsoring the conference with the simple goal of helping east texans businesses get money.
Jim Bob Rollins, Director of the ACPAC says, " The purpose of the conference is to help business owners understand and compete for government contracts."
Lufkin mayor, Jack Gorden was in attendance to show his support for the conference. He says, " We're fortunate to have it in Lufkin, and we're hoping many people will avail themselves to these services."
The conference's main focus today was providing assistance to veterans. "Under Congressman Jim Turner it expanded to include veterans an opportunity. We explain what benefits are available to veterans."
But the bigger picture for the conference is to provide business owners the chance to meet one on one with major federal agencies. Several presenters and exhibitors will be available to give their expert advice, and it could be a boost to local businesses.
"Go talk to these different agencies and again it's opportunity to market their good and services."
With a rocky economy, the free conference is giving businesses another way to market themselves, which couldn't have come at a better time.
"As we all know, small businesses is the heart of job creation and in our economy we need it right now, " say the Mayor.
