Lufkin, TX (KTRE) - The Lufkin Police Department has responded to more than 21 accidents since midnight last night.  More than a dozen of those calls occurred within a three hour period just before dawn this Thursday morning. All of the accidents appear to be weather related.  Drivers woke up to icy road conditions.

One of the more serious accidents occurred on Loop 287 east around 7:30 this morning. Emergency crews had to shutdown a section of the Loop in front of Loves Truck Stop and divert traffic onto the feeder roads following a four vehicle accident, including a school bus.  The loop is now back open.

One woman, Karen Conner of Etoile, who was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital where she was treated and later released. The driver of the school bus, Pablo Guerrero reported an injury and was evaluated by paramedics. Police also tell us that one child was injured and taken to the hospital.  That child's name and condition are unknown. Everyone else, including the rest of the busload of children, are apparently OK.

Police believe icy road conditions caused Shane Babbs of Nacogdoches to lose control of the black pickup truck he was driving and hit Conner's grey Kia Optima, causing a chain reaction.  Conner's car spun out of control and hit the red Ford pickup truck driven by Isidro Perez of Lufkin and the Lufkin school bus driven by Pablo Guerrero.

One driver involved in the wreck told East Texas News the vehicles in front of him lost control and caused him to spin out of control and hit the guardrail. He was not injured, however, his car has major damage.

No citations were issued.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and watchout. Road conditions are expected to improve as the temperatures warm up.
