Freedom Fighters; Charles Pappas

Charles Pappas, not only fought in World War Two, as a member of the first occupation force in Japan, he was able to see first hand the devastation that atomic bombs had left in that country.

Pappas joined the Marine Corps at the age of eighteen. Now at the age of eighty-five, he vividly remembers the battle of Iwo Jima, where he lost many friends, and the occupation of Japan near Nagasaki, referred to as "the valley of death.

One of ten children of Greek Immigrants, Pappas had three brothers who also served in World War Two.

Ironically, he and his brother Billy were on the same ship bringing troops home from war in 1945.
