MLK events take on special meaning

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Martin Luther King Day comes just one day before the historic inauguration of president elect Barack Obama. This leads to lots of planning for local MLK events. In Nacogdoches special effort is underway to tie observances into the inauguration.

"It's been 40 years since the death of Dr. Martin Luther King and the things he marched about we're finally starting to see those things today," said Patrick Sanders, MLK planning committee member.

MLK Day is evolving into a day of service. A volunteer recruitment fair will be held with that in mind. "One thing that President elect Obama, he's trying to motivate people to give in service to their community. He's trying to motivate people on his web site to volunteer," added Boris Caldwell, another planning member.

The event includes a prayer meeting, downtown march, courthouse rally and a volunteer recruitment fair.  Another mlk celebration will be held in north redland near central heights with a parade and trail ride.
