Six year old has need for speed

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - In June Steve Lewis bought his son Ryan a go-kart.  It was supposed to be a nice little hobby.  Don't be fooled.  This isn't child's play.

"They've got to wear a rib protector," Lewis explains as he also shows a off a brand new neck brace for his son. "Before they race you've got to make sure they go to the bathroom."

Ryan is still a kid.   But this six year old has a need for speed.

"He's (Ryan) not scared of anything," Lewis says.  "He's not scared to race, he's not scared to turn."

Ryan's not even scared to crash.

"I've been wrecking a whole lot sometimes," he says.

"His (Ryan) worst wreck was in Waco," Lewis says.  "One of the cars in front of him spun out and in doing so hit him head on and he ended up on top of her kart."

Ryan usually does find the finish line.  In just six months of racing, he's becoming one of the best kid kart drivers in the country.

"It feels like you're going very fast," Ryan says. "I feel like it in my heart."

Ryan and his family are traveling all over the country, gaining sponsorships and racing with top competition.  Ryan has even been selected to join the Tornado racing team.  It's an elite group of kid-kart drivers in California.

"With him being a six year old he's racing kids that are 7 and 8 years old with more experience," Lewis says.

Ryan's experience has just begun.  Imagine how fast he'll be when he's seven.
