President Obama to Order Iraq Withdrawal After One Day in Office

by Kirby Gibbs

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - President Obama isn't wasting any time getting to work. He was just sworn in today, but tomorrow, will begin the process of withdrawing american troops out of Iraq within 16 months.

After being separated by an unpopular war many East Texas families say they're more than ready for troops to come home, and support president obama's decision to get the ball rolling... Out of Iraq.

"It's time. I think that the job that we went over there to do has been done. And I would love to see the families get back together again. I think that they've been a part way too long" says one East Texan.

"Those guys need to be home", said another. "They don't need to be over there. And my heart aches for the mothers that have lost their sons. Let those people do what they want to; we've got people here, in the states right now that need the help."

While this has been a trying time for many families with loved ones at war, Lieutenant General Orren Whitton says the military business is still favorable for many. "I know they're looking forward to seeing them, but you know, the reinlistment rates, that's the rate at which soldiers reinlist to stay in the army, is at an all time high. And it's certainly so in Iraq".

Others... Aren't so sure about the plan to bring troops home so soon.

"I'm undecided about that cause I'm ready for them to come home, but I'm worried that if he brings them home, then you know, they might think we're chicken and come after us."Another East Texan told KTRE, "I think that the war's gonna be here, if he brings them back too early."

One thing is for sure, America is proud of its soldiers.

"Our soldiers over their are performing splendidly, they're doing it with high morale, they're proud of their country, and they're doing very important work", says Lieutenant General Whitton. "But that doesn't mean they don't want to come home and see their families, they do.

But in all reality, the Lieutenant General Whitton says, it's more likely that troops will be totally withdrawn from Iraq in three years, not 16 months.
