'Jacks Hold Off Nicholls State, 17-14

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Tony Tompkins rushed for two touchdowns and Stephen Coker hit a fourth-quarter field goal to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 17-14 win over Nicholls State Saturday night on a wet, sloppy field at Nicholls' Guidry Stadium.
SFA (4-2, 1-0 Southland Conference) tied the game at 14-14 in the third quarter on Tompkins' 14-yard TD run. Coker kicked a 19-yard field goal with 2:53 remaining. The field goal was set up by a Braxton O'Banion interception at the SFA goal line which he returned 57-yards to the Nicholls State 43-yard line. The 'Jacks then moved down the field behind the running of Tompkins and Gary Allen (20 carries - 94 yards), to the eventual winning score.
Nicholls (5-2, 1-1) had 202 total yards, with just 30 yards passing. Josh Son rushed for 93 yards on 17 carries. He went 4-for-13 for 30 yards and two interceptions.
The 'Jacks had 298 yards rushing. Tompkins had 154 yards on 23 carries, with TD runs of 11 and 14 yards. Gary Allen ran for 94 yards on 20 carries.
Michael Williams went 8-for-15 for 65 yards and an interception for SFA.
Son had a 29-yard TD run in the first, to tie the score 7-7. Rudy August had a 5-yard TD run in the third to put Nicholls up 14-7. SFA came right back with its second touchdown of the night to tie the score at 14-14 with Tompkins' second touchdown of the night.
SFA will host Sam Houston this week as part of homecoming festivities on the SFA campus. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
