Two people arrested in Newton County murder

Newton, Tx (KTRE) - Two people have been arrested for the murder of 23-year-old Byron Land.

24-year-old Brandon Lee Lewis confessed to Newton Police that he fatally shot Land on County Road 2036.

Lewis was arrested when five U.S. Marshall's found him at his aunt's house in Jasper County.

Sheriff Joe Walker says Lewis has been cooperative since his arrest.

Also arrested was Lewis' girlfriend, 26-year-old Jodie Self.

Walker said Self was driving the truck that Lewis was in when he shot Land.

Both have been held in the Newton County jail, on individual $150,000 bonds.
