Local group makes dreams come true for East Texas girls

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - They are not exactly fairy god mothers, but for some girls the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council comes pretty close when they give them prom dresses.

"I think it's important that we do it because we have an avenue to reach kids and we have a good relationship with all the local school districts, so it seems like an obvious fit that we would take on the project," ADAC Intervention Coordinator Kim Simmons said.

These days not everyone can afford to shell out the big bucks for prom.  However, the price for these prom dresses is one education seminar to learn about drinking, driving, and staying safe on prom night.

The group said they do what they can to make sure every girl that comes in finds a dress that is a good fit.

The Elite Cleaners is also getting on board, cleaning all the dresses for free.   Their seamstress said she wanted to give other girls the chance she missed out on.

"Well, it's great because I never went to prom, so it's great that they get to go and have a nice dress and look pretty," Donna Allman said.

Simmons said the smiles and tears is why she continues to do this every year.

"When we can outfit a girl with a dress they really like in a color they want, in a style that fits them, it's just such a relief on their face and some of them are so excited," Simmons said.

As for more fairy god mother business in the future, Simmons hopes to have more girls, more dresses, and a bigger place to keep all the dresses.

The prom dress program has been extended to include Nacogdoches County.   You can volunteer yourself, or your new and used dresses by calling the alcohol and drug abuse council at 936-634-5753.
