Bearkats spoil homecoming for the second time in three years

Oct. 19, 2002

The Bearkats of Sam Houston State spoiled the 2002 homecoming for SFA with a 10-7 win over the 'Jacks on a rain soaked field Saturday night.

Sam Houston scored the winning touchdown with 6:36 to play in the fourth quarter following an interception near midfield by Michael Thompson. Thompson picked off a Michael Williams pass on a third and two play and returned the ball to the SFA 37-yard line.

Sam Houston then marched down the field in nine plays converting on fourth and two at the SFA 29-yard line to keep the drive alive. Maurice Harris scored on a two yard run and Joey Price's extra point was good to give Sam Houston the 10-7 lead.

The 'Jacks got the ball back with still plenty of time to play but a stingy Sam Houston defense, ranked seventh in the Southland Conference entering play, forced the 'Jacks to go three and out. Williams lined up in the shotgun on fourth and four at the 'Jacks 34-yard line and quick kicked the ball 64-yards, out of bounds at the Sam Houston two yard line.

The defense could not hold the Bearkats in the hole however as Sam Houston's Travis Tobaben connected with Michael Darnell for 39-yards on third down and six, to move the ball all the way to SFA 45-yard line.

The 'Jacks did get the ball back with less than a minute to play but could not threaten. SFA was held to only 257 yards of total offense, 94 coming through the air. RB Gary Allen led the SFA ground attack with 13 carries for 66 yards.

Tony Tompkins added 12 carries for 63 yards. Williams connected with TE Kevin Landry for a three yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter for the 'Jacks only score of the night.
