ANGELINA COUNTY (KTRE) - An East woman who has fought through two liver transplants since she was four, has passed away at Baylor hospital in Dallas.
Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Clawson Assembly of God. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Carroway Funeral Home.
For almost two weeks Kelly Musick Smith has been on a ventilator fighting for her life. Many times throughout her lifetime Kelly beat the odds and doctors questioned her ability to survive. Since her last liver transplant she has given birth to a son who will turn four in June, something most liver transplant patients aren't able to do. During her toddler years, Kelly was often referred to as "Angelina County's Baby" because of the outpouring support and concern local residents had for her and her family.
While Kelly has proven to be strong, her body had been struggling to fight off an infection caused by a surgical procedure that family members say went wrong. In addition to the infection, Kelly was also in need of another liver transplant, as well as a kidney transplant. Once while speaking to a youth group from her church Kelly said, "When God is ready for me, I'll be ready for Him." Kelly was taken off the ventilator and died shortly before two o'clock Monday afternoon.
Family and church members had planned a fundraiser to help raise money for Kelly's medical expenses, Grace Baptist Church in Clawson, will be selling barbecue plates on Friday, February 27th, but the orders have to be in before February 20th.
