A home run for Lufkin's economy

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Home run or strike out at the ball park, it is a win-win situation for the Lufkin economy.

"There's 49 teams here, and 42 of those teams travel. Which means all their parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters are going to come. So, it brings a lot of money back into the city," said Jimmy Eby, tournament coordinator.

With teams traveling from as far as Louisiana, local hotels like the Comfort Inn are going to be busy. All the excitement could spark a chain reaction.

"If people come in here then more people are going to go to businesses, so really people who stay here are helping other businesses too," said Ashley Simpson, a Comfort Inn employee.

Mike Ross is happy to spend the weekend watching his daughter play ball.

Ross said, "We're going to be going to a local putt-putt establishment for some night time putt-putting, to give the girls a break from 6 games...we're going to be spending the night tomorrow night."

After a long day of running, sliding, and cheering for your teammates, it is nice to take your mind out of the game.

"If they won a game they like to just have fun and we have an indoor pool," Simpson said.

There's nothing like winning a softball game to boost your spirits and the economy.

All 49 teams will play six games each. The tournament will continue through Saturday night.
