East Texas church gets a lesson in Black history

KENNARD, TX (KTRE) - An East Texas church heard more than a sermon today... They also received a valuable lesson in Black history from one of their members.

Artifacts that dated as far back as the early 1900's were presented to the congregation of New Hope Baptist Church as a reminder... That despite the economic recession we face today, people once had to make do in a depression. The congregation also celebrated the journey and accomplishments of African Americans.

Deacon Willie Z. Mitchell told KTRE, "It's to let them know where we really come from what we went through. I just like to touch basis with them and let them see what we all went through. We had a rough time."

Deacon Mitchell has been collecting historical artifacts from his ancestors and community members. He hopes younger generations will learn to appreciate some of the luxuries they enjoy today.
