Angelina County man killed in Highway 103 east accident

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Police discover a lighter in the victim's hand, a crack pipe on the driver's seat and three rocks of crack cocaine in a container inside the car following a fatal accident on Highway 103 east near Loop 287 in Lufkin.

Lufkin Police Lt. David Young says blood tests on the victim are being conducted, however, an autopsy was not ordered.  The results of those tests could take weeks before they are known.

The victim is identified as Trey Gordon Morgan, 25, of Angelina County.

Investigators found no tire marks on the roadway to indicate a sudden movement like a swerve to avoid a collision.  They say when he was pulled from the vehicle he had a lighter in his hand.  A crack pipe was found in the driver's seat and three rocks of crack cocaine were found in a container inside the car.

In a statement released Wednesday morning police said the traffic accident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of Atkinson Drive (Highway 103 east).  The car was traveling eastbound on Atkinson when it veered across the westbound lanes, left the roadway and struck a tree before catching on fire.  The victim was the only occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of death is not known, but the victim's body did not burn in the fire.
