Walk Across Texas begins this month

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Texas founders spent a lot of time walking across Texas. Now on Texas Independence Day children are encouraged to walk across Texas not because they have to, but because it's good for them. Nacogdoches Head Start is helping kick off the annual 'Walk Across Texas' event. Teachers served as cheerleaders to build enthusiasm. Families, individuals and businesses are encouraged to grab a pedometer and start keeping count of the steps they take.  "We had 1300 participants last year," said Karen Tucker, with Texas AgriLife.  "Also Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition adopted the program and that was part of the criteria that helped us get the Gold Status Award from the Department of Health Services."   The Head Start children started walking this morning.
