LIVE BLOG: Tracking the 2018 midterm election

EAST TEXAS (KTRE) - The 2018 midterm election is underway and it’s a big night for candidates across the nation.

Tonight we’ll take a look at what’s happening in East Texas and across the state.

Several candidates are running uncontested. Candidates who face no opponents are poised to take their oaths of office after the election. Here’s who’s running unopposed.

Perhaps the most heavily-watched race of the night in the Lone Star state will be the U.S. Senate race. Incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is facing a challenge from Democrat Beto O’Rourke. Both candidates campaigned heavily in East Texas, holding rallies in Tyler and Longview.

Polls close at 7 p.m. in Texas.

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, is leading the polls with 71 percent of votes to challengers Democrat Shirley McKellar and Libertarian candidate Jeff Callaway. McKellar has 27 percent of the vote and Callaway has 1 percent. Votes are still rolling in.

Early numbers show Beto O’Rourke leading in the polls, O’Rourke has 56.81 percent of the vote to Cruz’s 42.6 percent.

7:45 p.m.

In Nacogdoches County, voters appear to be in favor of a $77.9 million school bond. Only 4 percent of precincts have reported.

8:15 p.m.

The Associated Press has called the U.S. Representative race in favor of Louie Gohmert, R-Texas. He had more than 70 percent of the vote as of 8:15 p.m. He beat Democrat Shirley McKellar. AP also called the Texas governor’s race in favor of Governor Greg Abbott. The Republican incumbent beat his Democratic challenger Lupe Valdez.

Closer to home, 6,396 of the early voters in Nacogdoches County voted in favor of the $77.9 bond for the Nacogdoches school district. A total of 3,148 people voted against it.

9:30 p.m.

Republicans are expected to retain control of the Senate, Matt Schaefer is expected to retain his District 6 seat and all three Longview props are expected to pass. See Election results here.

“Republican Sen. Ted Cruz fended off rising-star Democrat Beto O’Rourke to win re-election in a much-watched Texas Senate race that began as a cakewalk but needed a visit from President Donald Trump to help push the incumbent over the top,” the Associated Press reports.
