East Texas Kitchen: Spicy Ranch-Style Crackers

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - This recipe is super easy and “as much fun to make as it is to eat.”

I always love to take something to a party for folks to eat. It’s somewhat expected because I’m a chef.

Here is a quick and easy snack. It’s perfect for a New Year’s buffet. It utilizes few ingredients, takes almost no time, and needs little clean-up. You won’t dirty dishes, and you won’t have to cook. At the same time, it’s something homemade. Be prepared to answer questions because everyone will be asking for the recipe.

  • 1 box of saltine crackers (any brand, salted or unsalted)
  • 1 envelope of ranch salad dressing & seasoning mix (any brand, but not dip mix)
  • 1 cup of canola oil (any brand or any other light cooking oil)
  • 2-3 tablespoons of cracked red pepper flakes (more than 3 tablespoons may be too spicy)

You will also need a gallon Ziploc bag or a large mixing bowl.

Directions: Open all four sleeves of saltines and empty into a gallon Ziploc bag. Mix together the oil, the envelope of dry ranch mix, and the cracked red pepper flakes. Mix well, then pour into the bag of crackers. Seal bag and gently turn bag while gently shaking and allowing oil mixture to completely coat crackers. Set aside a few minutes, and then turn and mix again. No need for cooking. Crackers are ready to eat and will remain crisp for days. The bag will remain oily, so you might want to transfer them to another bag or some other air tight container. Experiment with other seasonings. You can also substitute grated Parmesan cheese for the red pepper flakes.
