Clinic offers ‘hot’ solution to dealing with stubborn head lice

Got head lice? Lice clinic works to put an end to nit picking

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - If you’ve ever had to deal with lice, you know it can be a pain to get rid of. That’s why a clinic in East Texas is giving you more options to eliminate the pests.

“Yikes! Please don’t let this be lice, let it be dandruff,” explains Erin Oyer, a mother.

It’s not unusual for children to pick up lice at school and its unfortunately much more difficult to get rid of them.

“It happens, and it spreads like wildfire,” adds Oyer.

Oyer’s daughter recently came home with lice and, after using over the counter products, nothing seemed to work.

“We could not shake it this time. Every time we would do a shampoo, about four days later, we would see some more coming back,” says Oyer.

So Oyer turned to the internet for other options. That’s where she found Lice Clinic of America in Tyler.

“To be able to have an option that says we will take care of this, they will be gone, and we will guarantee the work that’s huge, I’m super thankful,” says Oyer.

Matt Smith, owner of Lice Clinic of America in Tyler, says it’s a common problem many families have been experiencing lately.

“They’re ready to burn their mattress, burn their house, shave their kids head,” explains Smith.

Which is why he and his wife opened up their business.

“I would never think this was as big of an epidemic and that’s what it is an epidemic as it is in East Texas,” adds Smith.

He says it doesn’t take much to get them going.

“One bug can lay up to 150 knits, which are the eggs, and 7 to 10 days those knits hatch,” explains Smith.

The local clinic is offering a quick cure for eliminating lice and their eggs through a three-step process involving a heated air treatment, a topical rinse, and a comb out.

“It’s a controlled heat machine that works with a dehydration process. And what that does is it dehydrates and kills all live bugs.”

Head-to-head contact is the primary way one gets it. Smith adds the newest way it’s happening is by taking selfies.

“So when people lean in and take a picture and put their heads together,” explains Smith,"I mean it happens that quick."

The key to controlling the creepy crawlers is vigilance and communication.

The clinic says the treatment is more than 99% effective. In most cases it just takes one visit to get rid of the lice.

Treatments run about $170 and take up to 90 minutes to complete.

However, doctors say traditional treatments don’t always work because not everyone follows the recommended instructions.
