Tuesday night basketball: Huntington playoff bond, Lufkin-Nac ready for Round 3

HUNTINGTON, TX (KTRE) - The final night of the high school basketball offered plenty of excitement.

In Huntington the Red Devills were able to beat Center 49-32, clinching the 3rd seed in the 20-4A district. Carthage took home the tile with Hudson in 2nd place and Jasper in 4th. After making the regional tournament for three straight years, Center is watching the playoffs from home.

The win was also the 400th win of Coach Shawn Jones’ career.

“There are a lot of quality young men in that 400," Jones said. "That is what matters to me. It is not about my number. Tonight It was about 22. It was about getting our 22nd win and getting in the playoffs.

This was the second year in a row Huntington had a must win game to gte in the playoffs at the end of their season.

“That is our league," Jones said. "Every night is a ‘you better bring it or you can get beat’ type of night. Every night will come down like that. We prepare for it all year. There is a must win game some where.”

Lufkin and Nacogdoches have had two great games this year with the visitors winning both matchups. Both teams finish the season tied at the top of the 16-5A district. Lufkin won a close game on the road in Marshall 62-53 and Nacogdoches was able to pull out a 53-50 win on the road at Pine Tree. Both teams will meet one more time Friday night for the right to be the No.1 seed in the district heading into the playoffs. That game is set for 6 p.m.

In 22-2A action, the district was already decided entering the final night of the season. No.1 Shelbyville had the district locked up. They played Martinsville who was also in the playoffs as the 4 seed out of the district. Then there is No. 9 Tenaha and No.14 Woden fighting for the 2nd and 3rd seed. After Tenaha beat the Eagles in Tiger Land, Woden looked to defend their home court. Woden would pull off a comeback in the final minutes and win 58-55. The two schools held a coin flip in which Tenaha won and would now be able to decided their fate. Coach Greg Jenkins decided to take the lower seed and enter the playoffs as the 3rd seed. They will take on New Summerfield in the first round of the playoffs. Woden will take on Douglass. Martinsville will get Cushing.
