LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win.
On Senior Night, The Lufkin Panthers led by six seniors were able to squeak by the Nacogdoches Dragons 5-2.
With the win, the Panthers keep pace with Hallsville for first place in the district. If both teams win their season finales on Friday then the two would play Saturday to determine the 1 and 2 seed out of the district heading into the playoffs.
The team making the playoffs is big considering they missed it last year in 6A.
“The seniors mean a lot more to the program then the individual team,” Head Coach John Cobb said. “They are setting an example to the JV and Sophmore team. These seniors have great chemistry. They all hang out together and get along together. You don’t have that with every class and I think that has a lot to do with our success.”
The Panthers were tested late with Nacogdoches having the bases loaded in the seventh but the defense was able to hold. It was just another example of this team not caving in under pressure.
“This is a direct refection of the senior this year,” Cobb said. “We come together, focus and flush the bad things that happen.”
The two teams will meet up again on Friday night at Nacogdoches High School.
