For the 10th time in program history and fourth since 2010, the SFA softball team will be competing for a spot in a NCAA Regional at the 2019 Southland Conference Softball Tournament, held Tuesday-Friday, May 7-10 at Lady Demon Diamond in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
The Ladyjacks, who wrapped up the 2019 regular season earlier Sunday with a 34-19 overall record and an 18-9 Southland mark, will enter the eight-team championship bracket as the tournament’s No. 4 seed. Receiving a first-round bye, SFA will play its opening round game Tuesday, May 7 at 4 p.m. and is set to face either fifth-seeded Southeastern Louisiana or No. 8 seed Central Arkansas.
The top two seeds in the Southland Tournament - league champion and No. 1 seed Sam Houston State (31-21, 22-5 Southland) and No. 2 seed Nicholls (32-20, 21-6 Southland) - receive double-round byes, while third-seeded McNeese (28-28, 19-8 Southland) and the Ladyjacks earn single-round byes. The eighth-seeded Bears (26-27, 12-15 Southland), No. 7 seed Lamar (23-33, 14-13 Southland), No. 6 seed Northwestern State (28-25, 15-12 Southland) and the fifth-seeded Lady Lions (32-21, 17-10 Southland) all play a single-elimination first round game Tuesday, while the remainder of the tournament is double elimination. Southeastern Louisiana and UCA will begin the Southland Tournament with a 11 a.m. first pitch Tuesday, May 7 as Northwestern State and Lamar are set for a 1:30 p.m. matchup Tuesday, with the winner taking on third-seeded McNeese in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m.
Should SFA come out victorious in its opening round matchup, the Ladyjacks would take on top-seeded Sam Houston State Wednesday, May 8 at 11 a.m. With an opening round loss, SFA would play at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. No team in the Southland had a better record (34-19, .642) or won more games than the Ladyjacks during the regular season.
SFA will be seeking its third Southland Tournament title and first since 2008. The Ladyjacks also won the league tournament in 1990 and own a 17-15 (.531) all-time record at the Southland’s annual championship tournament. During the regular season, SFA went 1-2 against Southeastern Louisiana on the road after facing the Lady Lions across the opening weekend of Southland play. The Ladyjacks took game two of the series by a convincing 11-6 score after dropping game one 7-1, and fell 3-1 in the decisive third game.
