ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - It was an unusual day for an Angelina County family on Thursday.
Roadkill off the side of State Highway 94 in Hudson became a source of food.
Melissa Wheeler and her family harvested an alligator after a game warden called them early this morning. The big guy took a hit on the head when a little car bumped and took him out. Wheeler’s husband hauled the 12-foot alligator back to their front yard.
"We've always thought that it would be cool to have the opportunity to harvest an alligator and actually go out and catch one ourselves. But we've not had the chance and opportunity to do that," Wheeler said. "Having it here today, it really was an exciting day. We learned how much work it really does take to process one of these size animals."
While it’s not alligator season, Wheeler said they do have a certificate from the game warden to possess the alligator.
