Angelina College, Tyler Junior College move on to NJCAA nationals

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - The Angelina College Lady Roadrunners are heading back to the national tournament for the first time since 2014.

The NJCAA announced that two teams from region XIV would get into the field this year.

On Thursday afternoon the Lady Runners beat San Jac 5-4, advancing to the Championship game to face Tyler Junior College. Tyler won the game 6-3 and will move on as the automatic qualifier. It will be the forth time in the five year program history for TJC.

“I think every time you go your experience is different,” Maria Winn-Ratliff said. “Last time we went to the Grand Canyon. We have done some community service in schools. You have to make it special because every team is special. For us we are team 5. This is our fifth year. We want to represent Texas and region 14 the best we can.”

AC will go on to the national tournament as an at-large. Angelina last won it all in 2014. It has been a year full of emotion for Angelina Coach Mark Mattson who lost his father earlier in the season.

“That is the guy that I learned fast-pitch from. I am so grateful to him. I know him and my mom are watching down on us the whole time and giving us all they have. I am very proud.”
