NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - The SFA ladyjacks are preparing for the NCAA national track meet later this week in Austin.
“Essentially they have nothing to loose,” SFA track coach Michael Courtney said. “Just run and leave it all on the track. Whatever happens, happens.”
After their performance at the NCAA Western Regional, they became the first Ladyjack relay team to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet, finishing 10th overall and earning one of three at-large bids.
“We were not an automatic qualifier but when we ran that time at regionals I was confident,” Courtney said. “We had to wait for the last heat to run. There were some big schools in that heat and once that last heat ended I said we’re in there. I am so excited for the girls and to be here.”
“I knew it was coming,” Cayla Burch said. “From the way we have been training from day 1 we were going to make it. We are a 400 meter team so I knew we were making it.”
The team is heading to Austin with nerves but no fear.
" I will tell you. This is something special," Imani Nave said. “This is phenomenal and we are making history.”
When they line up in their spots they will block out the thousands in the stands and the other teams on the track. For the four runners it is only about what they will be doing.
“We can do anything the other schools can do,” Daijia Carr said. “We are runners. We are all the same age. We have God-given talents and we can do anything we put our minds to.”
We are coming," Burch said. " It doesn’t matter that we are a small school. We are going to get you regardless."
The NCAA Championships will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, a familiar location for the qualifying SFA athletes. Competition begins on June 5 and wraps up on June 8.
