For his team’s 2019-2020 debut, Angelina College head coach Nick Wade made sure his Roadrunners were going to jump straight into the fire.
AC’s season opener came against a very good McLennan College team, and the ‘Runners held up well for 34 of the game’s 40 minutes. But the Highlanders put together a run starting with just under six minutes to play, eventually pulling away to win 70-64 Tuesday at Shands Gymnasium.
The ‘Runners led 57-54 with 6:32 to play in the contest when the Highlanders’ Akili Vining hit a three-pointer for the 57-57 tie. McLennan then put together a quick 7-0 run and held on late to drop AC to 0-1 to start the season.
AC’s Gwarren Douglas scored 15 of his team-high 23 points in the first half. Christyon Eugene added nine points and Travis Henson seven in the loss.
Lorenzo Anderson led McLennan with 23 points. Vining finished with 15 for the 2-1 Highlanders.
