LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - The Ellen Trout Zoo has a nice variety of animals for the Lufkin community and surrounding areas to enjoy, and the zoo now has plans written out for a new gorilla exhibit.

The planning and funding process for the exhibit has been the main focus so far.

According to Gordon Henley, the director of the Ellen Trout Zoo, they currently do not have any apes. He believes they will be a great addition to the zoo.

“We are in the planning stages right now for the lowland gorillas. That will finish up development in our current property," Henley said We have a couple acres left to develop,” Henley said. “We thought this would be an opportunity to provide additional housing for gorillas. The more space that is available then it makes breading programs at other zoo’s more functioning an operable.”

You can give donations towards the new gorilla exhibit online at cityoflufkin.com/zoo or on their Facebook page.
