Salvation Army Lufkin begins food drive at McWilliams and Sons

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - As the holiday season approaches, the need for food assistance is even more prevalent. Salvation Army Captain Jenifer Philips tells us meals are up 45,000 compared to this time last year.

As KTRE’S T’Ebonie Tanner reports the Salvation Army and McWilliams & Sons kicked off their annual food drive program to help people in the community.

The Salvation Army has been working to assist Angelina County residents through this pandemic.

“Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, we have served over 65,000 hot meals through our community feeding program drive-thru. We have also done over 5,000 food boxes,” said Jenifer Phillips, Captain of Lufkin’s Salvation Army.

The annual food drive is set up so that people can drop off non-perishable food items at different locations in the community until December 11th. Some of the items will go towards the salvation army’s community feeding program.

“Right now, with this time of year with Thanksgiving coming up and Christmas, there are a lot of people out there that need some meals. This food drive is designed to provide that for them,” said Shea Smith, Chief Operating Officer for McWilliams & Son Heating and Air Conditioning.

“Food is such an essential need. When people say that they are hungry, we want to do anything that we can to assist in that way,” said Phillips.

One Lufkin resident Rosa Yarbrough says she has donated to the salvation army many times but is now requesting assistance as well.

“This pandemic is awful. I have never imagined that this would happen to me. On the 25th of September this year, I ended up becoming a recipient because I lost my job. It was devastating,” said Yarbrough. “The Salvation Army has been there for me spiritually, mentally, and especially in prayer and with the help of the food drive.”

She says she wishes more people in the community knew about this helpful resource.

'If it was not for the Salvation Army, I believe a lot of people would not have food to cook their families this Christmas holiday or Thanksgiving. So, it is just awesome," said Yarbrough
