LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - The Salvation Army of Lufkin’s Angel Tree program has been up and running for a few weeks now.
The organization is halfway to their goal of assisting 600 applicants this year.
“It has doubled what we did last year, so we need everybody’s help,” said Captain Jennifer Philips from Lufkin’s Salvation Army.
Philips tells us they have quite a few angels available for adoption.
“Right now, I estimate that we still have about 300 left on the tree. So, we are over halfway done. Everybody has been very responsive, so great job. We still have halfway to go, so we do not want to stop now,” Philips said.
Although the angel tree deadline is December 11th, Phillips says they are making great progress.
“I feel like we have seen over and over again, that even in difficult times is when people rise to the occasion and give to those that are maybe in more difficult situation than them and going through a hardship,” Phillips explained.
If you are not out and about, there is an option to donate online. Phillips says the organization has received about 50 gifts from people shopping online at Walmart.
“There are lots of different things to choose from, from clothing articles to balls or special gifts for this Christmas season,” she added.
Phillips says what better time to give back to those in need in our community than this weekend.
“It is a great time to instill that into your loved ones. Maybe you have a niece or nephew that you can take to do the most good and adopt an angel to give back that way,” said Phillips.
