TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - The Tyler Junior College Lady Apache basketball team was back on the court and ready to face the challenges of a shortened 21 season due to COVID-19.
“We are getting back into our routine with new players,” TJC women’s basketball coach Trenia Hoard said. “We are doing it with a new team and new players in a situation we have never been in before. We are doing the best we can with what we have.”
The team enters the season after qualifying for the NJCAA National tournament last season. The tournament was eventually canceled.
“We missed the opportunity and we didn’t get that experience,” Hoard said. “The kids know they earned that opportunity and worked to the national tournament. This year we are just playing. We are grateful to play. If we have 10 games or 20 games we are just happy to be on the floor and we are going to enjoy the ride.”
The team will look different this year. Only two players are back on the team from last year’s squad. One of the two was a starter. The team will open the season on January 20 at home against North American University.
“We are tall and fast,” Hoard said. “We have good kids. It is really getting used to a new team and doing it all over again, except we are doing it in less days.”
