Lukfin ISD encountering bus transportation issues, shortage of drivers

LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Lufkin Independent School District says they are working to resolve transportation issues due to a shortage of school bus drivers.

Assistant Superintendent Daniel Spikes says the district is in desperate need of drivers after recent resignations. Those resignations are coupled with the return to in-class learning, and have resulted in a transportation shortage.

Spikes says the district has students on a transportation waiting list, because virtual learning has ended, and many students have returned to school.

Spikes says the district is looking at what can be done to make up for the shortage of drivers.

“At this time, we are working on some solutions to try to make sure that all of our students get some transportation to their campus,” Spikes said. “We are seeing if we can condense routes and try to come up with a plan to make sure again that we can get all of our children to school. That is our number one priority right now at transportation services.”

Spikes says capacity limits on buses is also a factor since COVID-19 protocols require fewer students on each bus.
