(KLTV) - On this day in 1836, Texas declared independence from Mexico and created the Republic of Texas.

The six-page document was signed by 59 delegates and the declaration of independence was adopted. The U.S. officially recognized the Republic of Texas as an independent nation one year and a one day later, on March 3, 1837.

March 2 is also Texas Flag Day and Sam Houston Day.
