NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - As the variant omicron spreads everywhere more people are choosing to be tested for COVID-19.

SFA and Nacogdoches City /County Emergency Management are attempting to stay ahead of the demand.

Tuesday morning SFA opened a second COVID-19 testing site outside the university recreation center. For added convenience, it’s at the opposite end of campus from the health clinic. The result from the self-swab test comes within 15 minutes. The service is for only student, faculty, and staff.

Kayla Griffith is a student and works with Nacogdoches ISD.

“I work for Nacogdoches ISD as well and testing is important for everybody right now. And having this access to rapid testing is critical. Seeing them out here I know it helps me. Testing at the school, they do the rapid testing constantly for the teachers. And I’m just very thankful for both entities. "

SFA was pro-active. Tests were ordered from the State at the first mention of Omicron when test kits were abundant. Unlike now with pharmacies running out of at home tests in a matter of hours.

So, more people are using the free city/county mobile site operated by Embry Health in the CVS parking lot.

“When we were first began testing we were probably getting anywhere from seven to 30 people a day,” said Jakia Daniels, a tester. “Here in the last three weeks the rate picked up to where we’re testing anywhere from 150 to 250 a day.”

The swabs are sent off for PCR testing. Results arrive in 24 to 48 hours. Phone appointments are taken but fill up fast. Workers advise to just drive up for a test. It’s an effort to encourage people to be tested for a safer community.

SFA’S second testing site will remain open from nine to four until the end of the week. Health care workers will decide if demand warrants another week of service.

Embry Health mobile unit serves the public from 9 a.m. to 4:50 p.m., Monday thru Friday.
