Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith arrested in College Station ahead of SEC Media Days appearance
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Texas A&M wide receiver Ainias Smith was arrested overnight Wednesday by Texas A&M University Police. Smith is charged with driving while intoxicated, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana less than two ounces.
According to a probable cause statement, Smith was initially pulled over for speeding on University Drive just after 2 a.m. Wednesday. After police say he failed to pass a standard field sobriety test, Smith was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Smith also consented to a voluntary breathalyzer test at the time, which twice displayed he was below the legal limit of .08, registering .066 and .061.
Following his arrest, officers found a loaded pistol and a single, rolled joint in Smith’s vehicle while conducting a search. Because Smith was charged with possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated, he was also charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon while engaged in criminal activity.
Smith was expected to appear on behalf of the team at SEC Media Days in Atlanta this Thursday. He was a team captain last season and led the Aggies in both receptions and touchdown catches.
Online records show Smith was released from the Brazos County Detention Center on a combined $8,000 bond Wednesday morning. This is his first arrest for driving while intoxicated.
