64 spectacular trees featured at Museum of East Texas Festival of Trees in Lufkin
LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - This is the 28th year for the Festival of Trees hosted by the Museum of East Texas. This event allows different businesses and families around town to rent and decorate a Christmas tree however they please.
Executive Director John Handley said they have 64 trees up in the museum this year.
“We rent the trees. You can pay for whatever size you want, and you rent the tree, and either you decorate it or hire someone to decorate it,” Handley said.
He said all the proceeds go to scholarships.
“For art academy, for kids who can’t afford to pay for an art class. So, it’s a great cause and something we really look forward to,” Handley said.
They have had people come from all over to experience the festival, and Handley said there are many different businesses that have participated this year.
“Local drive-ins, pharmacies, a couple of medical businesses, and just some individual families who every year they just come, and they buy a tree,” Handley said.
He said he believes the people of Lufkin like traditions, and that’s why the festival is always a hit.
“I think people like traditions. They like something to look forward to, when your family comes from out of town. It’s one of those things. We’re free; you don’t have to pay admission. You can bring your family in and come just enjoy the sights and sounds,” Handley said.
He said the people of Lufkin always turn out.
“It’s just a really nice tradition. Lufkin is a small town, and I think when you have an event like this, the community really turns out, and they really do,” Handley said.
The Festival of Trees runs until Jan. 6.
