GARRISON, Texas (KTRE) - Dogs and cats are usually the types of animals that go missing New Year’s Eve after being scared by fireworks, but in Garrison, one ranch owner lost her emu. As the new year rolled in, the entire town was on high alert looking for Mr. Ed.

Roselake Ranch owner Miriam Mumm says their ranch is home to many different types of animals. On the ranch they do pony parties, petting zoos, give riding lessons, and guided horseback trails. Mumm says they have your typical farm animals, but they have exotic animals as well.

“So, we have our emus, and peacocks, we have a wallaby and then we have probably about 30 horses as well,” Mumm said.

Mr. Ed, one of their two emus, escaped the property New Year’s Eve after being spooked by fireworks and jumping over the fence. Mumm says she was unaware he was missing that night.

“The next morning, we got a call from a friend of ours asking if we were missing an emu, somebody had called him saying there was an emu sighting on 95,” Mumm said.

Mumm took to Facebook to ask if anyone had seen Mr. Ed. Many Garrison residents began messaging Mumm to report their Mr. Ed sightings.

“And we started to get feedback, the sheriff’s department had been notified about 2:30 in the morning that he was out and about,” Mumm said.

A local man found Mr. Ed in his pasture three miles away from his home. He was unaware that everyone was looking for a missing emu.

“His mother called him and said, ‘hey Roselake is looking for their emu’, and he figured maybe someone dumped the emu and he just opened his fence and let him in with his cows,” Mumm said.

The man called Mumm and they came to pick up Mr. Ed and bring him back home. Mumm says she’s grateful to the community for contributing to the search for Mr. Ed.

“I really appreciate how everyone shared, and was so worried about him, and how happy they were, as was I also, that he was back home. That is how we got him back, we would not have gotten him back if it wasn’t for all our friends on Facebook.”

Mumm says Mr. Ed will be put inside of a barn next holiday that involves fireworks.
