East Texas animal shelters overwhelmed by influx of puppies
TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Pets Fur People and many other animal shelters in East Texas are experiencing an influx of puppies now more than ever.
“This is probably the biggest influx of abandoned puppies that we’ve had in my 25 years here at Pets Fur People.” said Pets Fur People Executive Director Gayle Helms.
The shelter received over twenty puppies in the last few weeks. Helms says puppies are being dumped at the nearby cemetery and church. The shelter has no choice but to take them in, going from 75 dogs to now 95.
“There are vaccinations to give, worming to give. And so it’s really put a financial burden on us to take care of all these extra puppies. Overtime for the employees.”
They even had to make space at the receiving center.
At the Smith County Animal Control and Shelter, more stray dogs and even pregnant dogs have come in with one giving birth Thursday morning. The shelter has 58 with room for one more before they are maxed out.
The shelter’s supervisor, Amber Green says, “And we can’t get dogs out of here in a timely manner and we’re still getting calls and the necessary evil that nobody wants to do is to have to euthanize.”
Shelters are calling on pet owners to spay and neuter and emphasizing the importance of it.
“It’s healthier for the animal for one. But it also will cut down on issues with other dogs coming to your property or your dog running to somebody else’s property.” said Greene.
Helms added, “People can’t use the excuse any longer that it’s too expensive. There are low cost spay and neuter clinics all around East Texas. And really, our tax dollars are going to try and prevent this from happening.”
Shelters always encourage adopting, but it comes down to one thing. “Be responsible. They need to be a part of your family. And if you really are not going to make that commitment for 15 years, don’t adopt an animal.” said Helms.
A few low cost places to get your pet spayed and neutered, as well as vaccinated are Animal Protection League, the Heart Animal Rescue, Veterinary Services, and Snippets.
