NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) - Nacogdoches County is celebrating their annual Pineywoods Fair at the Expo and Civic Center. This five-day event brings families together through livestock shows and other attractions.

Nacogdoches Expo and Civic Center Director Anita Scott said having livestock shows opens the door for youth to learn about agricultural industry.

“Hopefully they will then continue that and become part of the agricultural industry, so that we can have food and the clothes, and all the things that animals provide,” said Scott.

She said it’s not only about the shows.

Parent participant Kaycee Packard agreed that it’s all about family involvement.

“It really feels nice to be there with your children and watch them succeed,” said Packard.

First place broiler show winners Justin Shull and his family said showing their chickens together reminded them of the amount of work they put in to succeed.

“We didn’t expect to do great this year, but we did it this year, so it feels good,” said Shull.

Douglass ISD student George Burns said his experience showing cattle has made him more interested in livestock shows.

“It led to other things like pigs and chicken. Just fun to do it,” said Burns.

Scott said they have buyers’ groups who are working to help students further their education.

“They pool their money together and buy these animals, and again that goes all towards scholarships things like that,” said Scott.

Admission is $5 per person and parking is free.

The fair will continue until Sunday, October 15.
