LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) – A nearly two week trip, covering more than 2,300 miles on motorcycles is all to celebrate the Texas Department of Public Safety's 75th anniversary.

The agency was formed in 1935 and now troopers are wearing 75th anniversary badges to commemorate the milestone.

Troopers will make the trek on motorcycles in honor of how the organization first started.

Cars weren't used by the Texas Highway Patrol until the '40s.

One Lufkin trooper has been with the department for 27 years and plans to join the ride Saturday from Austin to Houston.

"It really means a lot because this will be history in the making," said DPS Trooper Greg Sanches.  "Not only will we be celebrating DPS, but also the troopers that have been killed in the line of duty."

Troopers will ride across Texas, stopping by the regional offices.
