ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin man is charged with evading arrest after a constable says he avoided a traffic stop and went to his house before jumping out of the vehicle and running away.

Angelina County Pct. 1 Constable Tom Selman said he was parked on Fuller Springs Drive Thursday night and observed Kevin Dean Weatherly, 46, speeding. Selman said he tried to pull Weatherly over, but he kept driving and made it to his house and jumped out and ran away before Selman could catch him.

Selman said he began investigating the case and checked the owner of the house and the vehicle and matched that identity with a mug shot at the Angelina County Jail and determined Weatherly was the one who fled the traffic stop.

Selman obtained a warrant for Weatherly's arrest. He said Weatherly called him after finding out Selman had been looking for him and apologized for fleeing the traffic stop and offered to turn himself in.

"I'm speculating he was drinking because I saw beer cans in the back of his vehicle," Selman said. "Also, his driver's license was suspended so I think that's why he would not stop."

Weatherly is charged with evading arrest and because he has a prior conviction, it is a felony charge.

Selman booked Weatherly into the Angelina County Jail on Tuesday.
