Jury Sentences 20-Year-Old to 35 Years

A Nacogdoches jury sentenced a 20-year-old man to 35 years in prison for what authorities say was a gang-related shooting.

Mateo Benitez received two concurrent 35 year sentences for each of the two counts of engaging in organized criminal activity. Benitez must serve at least half of his 35 year sentence before he is considered for parole.

He was found guilty of using a deadly weapon in the December 2002 shooting of 18-year-old Dominga Gonzalez and her then 19-year-old boyfriend, Rafael Hernandez.
