Funeral services for Mattie A. Schultz, 81, of Lufkin will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 3, 2004 in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel in Lufkin with Rev. Linley Hamofficiating.Interment will follow in Narrow Way Cemetery.
On Thursday, April 1, 2004, our mother, Mattie A. Schultz left this world to begin life eternal with her Lord. She was born to Floyd and Verr Thomas on September 5, 1922 in the Peavy Switch Community of Angelina County.She lived in Peavy Switch all of her life and was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
She married Samuel Schultz on March 14, 1944, and that union lasted until his death on July 4, 2003.She was a loving mother of six children.
Our mother was a product of the depression years, learning to cook by the age of 6 while her parents workedthe crops.She took great pleasure in cooking for her family.We will never forget her yeast rolls, buttermilk biscuits, and syrup cookies.No one was ever turned away from her table.
She also took great pleasure in gardening and taught her children the value of being self sufficient.The flowers in her yard each year were admired by the neighbors.
When school started back each September, our mom cried when she had to send us back to school.
Mom was a yellow-dog Democrat and didn’t mind who knew it, even her Republican children.
Survivors include her son and daughter in law, David and Barbara Schultz; daughter and son in law, Linda and Jim Heberling; son and daughter in law, Tom and Amy Schultz; daughter and son in law, Brenda and Linley Ham, all of Lufkin; son and daughter in law, Mike and Kathy Schultz of Conroe; daughter and son in law, Glenda and Jeff Barnes of Lufkin; grandchildren, Robert Pope, John Ham, Zach Barnes, Zane Barnes, Michael Schultz, Jr., Dede McCarty, Katrina Barnes, Ashley Schultz, Rhonda Maddux, Jennifer Schultz, Caitlin Schultz, Emily Schultz, Megan Schultz, Katie Schultz, Erin Barnes; 8 great grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Lovelady of Lufkin and Bobbie Collier of Rising Star; sister in law, Ruth Thomas of Lufkin;numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Sam Schultz and a grandson, Dwayne Schultz.
Pallbearers for her service will be Rodney McCarty, Brent Barnes, Robert Pope, John Ham, Zach Barnes, and Zane Barnes.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
