Former Lufkin Panther and Texas A&M running back Jorvorskie Lane has passed the first hurdle in his quest to make the 2012 NFL roster for the Miami Dolphins.
Lane just finished "rookie mini camp" and now has his site set on Dolphins training camp which begins July 26. He says he is working hard to convince his coaches that he belongs on this Dolphin team.
During mini and training camps as many as 80 players are allowed on the roster. Miami currently lists 90 players, according to the Dolphins team website. Lane's name is right there among them. He is listed as number 41, fullback, 5'11, 277 lbs., rookie.
Final roster cuts are more than two months away when the roster goes from 80 to 53. During the regular season only 45 players are designated to be on the active list. Lane plans to be on that final list.
Looking ahead, the Dolphins are scheduled to travel to Texas to play the Houston Texans for their first regular season game. The game will be held at Reliant Stadium at noon on September 9. Just two hours away from his hometown of Lufkin and less than 100 miles from his college alma mater, J-train supporters will likely attend in big numbers to see him play.
But for now, Lane is focused on the upcoming training camp. If you happen to be in the area, 12 of the 15 open practices to the public will be held at the Florida team's Nova Southeastern University training facility in Davie, and will start at 8:00 a.m., with the exceptions of a 9:15 a.m. practice on Saturday, August 4 when the Dolphins will host a practice at Sun Life Stadium, a 5:45 p.m. practice on Wednesday, August 8 and a 1:00 p.m. practice on Sunday, August 12.
The final scheduled open public practice will take place on Wednesday, August 15. The team will break training camp after travelling to Carolina to face the Panthers on Friday, August 17.
"We are excited and looking forward to the start of training camp and welcoming our loyal fans to watch the start of what will ultimately be the 2012 Miami Dolphins," said Miami Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin. "I know our coaches, staff and players are eagerly anticipating the start of the 2012 season and hope that our fans will share in our excitement and join us with the start of training camp."
Seating at the team's facility will be available for the first 2,000 fans in the bleachers, located on the west side of the practice facility. Parking is available at the Nova Southeastern University Medical School garage, located near the intersection of University Drive and S.W. 30th Street, between Griffin Road and I-595. Access to this garage is off University Drive and S.W. 30th Street.
Practice times are subject to change, and the most updated information can be obtained by calling the Dolphins practice hotline at (954) 452-7004. This is the 20th year that the Dolphins have hosted training camp at Nova Southeastern University.
