LIVINGSTON, TX (KTRE) - When you think of food and Texas, many people think of some good BBQ.
With summer almost here, a new list of the top 50 BBQ joints in the state has been released by "Texas Monthly." East Texas News traveled to two of the places from the list that located here in Deep East Texas, just to see how good they really are.
If you ever find yourself in the Lake Livingston area, stop on in at the Hitch-N-Post. The sign outside of the Hitch-N-Post says "not fast food, just good food."
"Even if I came in 49th, I would be elated," said Billy Nelson, the owner of the Hitch-N-Post. "There's a bunch of BBQ places in Texas."
Former Polk County Sheriff Billy Nelson opened up his café because of his love for the pit.
"I want to have the best brisket, because when a person takes something in their mouth, they have a lot of trust in you," Nelson said.
"The chopped beef sandwiches are some of the best around here, so I say it should be one of the best,' said David Carlisle, who visits the Hitch-N-Post regularly.
If you happen to be traveling towards Beaumont, you will find Billy's BBQ tucked away in a little building in Jasper.
"It's a big honor and it wasn't too big of a shock," said Billy Mahathay, the owner of Billy's BBQ.
The people eating there Friday, including some folks from Lufkin, said nothing beats the food at Billy's BBQ.
"It should be on the top 5, it's awesome," Lufkin resident Shawn Alexander said.
Billy's Mahathay wasn't ready to tell why his BBQ is so good.
"I guess the way I cook it and that's a secret," Mahathay said.
