LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin Police officers arrested a 39-year-old man for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly fired several shots at his estranged wife and her friends early Friday morning.
Antonio Balderas, of Lufkin is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on three second-degree felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Collectively, his bail was set at $30,000.
Sgt. David Casper, a spokesman for the Lufkin Police Department, said several calls came in about shots fired in the 1100 block of Johnson Street at approximately 2 a.m. Friday morning. When the LPD officers arrived on scene, a woman told them that her estranged husband showed up in the front yard with a pistol after some friends dropped her off.
The man then started firing at the vehicle that dropped the woman off, Casper said. After the woman approached the man on foot, she talked her estranged husband and convinced him to give her the gun.
Casper said the woman's friends attempted to flee the area in their vehicle and were located a short distance from the home in the 1100 block Johnson Street. The vehicle had a flat tire, and Casper said the LPD officers at the scene thought the flat was the result of one of the fired.
LPD officers located unfired rounds and spent casings in the area where the shooting occurred.
Casper said Balderas was taken into custody without further incident and charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon based on the number of victims. The woman gave the pistol to the LPD officers, and it and the rounds were taken collected as evidence.
