LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Some Lufkin students are getting some pretty cool hands-on learning assignments this week.

The soon to be 10th grade students are participating in the Gear STEM program at Lufkin High School.

They are learning the real science through Hollywood movies.

On Wednesday, the students were seeing what kind of energy it would take to stop a superhero.

All of the students say it is opening up a lot of possibilities.

"No matter how much you think you have already learned, there is always more to learn," said I'ycess Gold, a Lufkin ISD summer learning student.

"There are many careers out there. You can't just focus on one of them," said Ernesto Alvarez, a Lufkin ISD summer learning student. "Just open your mind to everything you can."

"It's getting me prepared for school. This is stuff we are going to do in class," said Brianna Martinez, a Lufkin ISD summer learning student. "I get to do it with my friends and that's better than sitting on the couch."

On Friday, the group will be taking a trip to NASA for a behind the scenes tour with real astronauts.
