TYLER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A fatal crash on US 69 in Tyler County slowed traffic as emergency personnel alternated southbound and northbound traffic in one open lane Wednesday morning. Both lanes are now open.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred at approximately 5:50 a.m. on US 69 near the FM 256 intersection.

A Freightliner tractor-trailer rig driven by Jackie Lanning, 43, of Arkansas, was traveling south on US 69, and a Chevrolet Cobalt driven by Sara Vaughn Irvin, 67, of Colmesneil, was traveling north.

"For an unknown reason, the driver of the Chevrolet drifted into the southbound lanes of traffic, striking the 18-wheeler," the press release stated. "The driver of the 18-wheeler moved onto the southbound shoulder of the roadway in an attempt to avoid the collision."

Tyler County's Precinct 3 justice of the peace, pronounced Irvin dead at the scene of the accident.

Lanning was not injured in the crash.

The fuel tank spilled in the crash, so it took longer for crews to clear the vehicles from the accident scene.

According to the press release, the accident is still under investigation. DPS troopers are trying to determine why the driver of the Cobalt drifted into the southbound lanes of US 69.
