HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - After responding to a report of a reckless driver on State Highway 19 near Lovelady late Saturday night, a Houston County-based Texas Department of Public Safety trooper arrested a 34-year-old Katy for allegedly driving while intoxicated with two young children in the pickup with him.

Ricardo Velasquez-Romero was arrested and charged with state-jail felony driving while intoxicated with a child under the age of 15 in the vehicle.

According to a DPS press release, a trooper went to check out a report of a reckless driver on SH 19 near Lovelady at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday. The trooper located the suspect vehicle, a white Ford pickup, east of Crockett.

When the trooper pulled the pickup over, he or she could detect the odor of alcohol on Velasquez-Romero, the driver, the press release stated. In addition, Velasquez-Romero did poorly on a field sobriety test, and he was arrested for DWI with a child because he had a 3-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy in the truck with him, along with three adult passengers.

Velasquez-Romero was taken to the Houston County Medical Center for a blood sample to be taken, and then he was taken to the county jail.

The two children were released into their mother's custody.
