SHELBY COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - An auto-pedestrian accident that occurred Wednesday night on State Highway 7 in Shelby County claimed the life of a 19-year-old Louisiana woman and sent another person to a Center hospital for treatment of his injuries.
According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday about 4.9 miles east of Center on SH 7. Shelby County DPS troopers investigated the fatal crash.
The preliminary crash investigation revealed that two people had just gotten out of their car to assist another motorist and were in the roadway when they were struck by a 2010 Ford Fusion driven by Mitzi Rhey Baker-Kennedy, 47, of Joaquin. The pedestrians were identified as Kadeshia Simone Barfield, 19, and Demanio Lavandrick Howard, 24, both of Mansfield, Louisiana.
Barfield was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Justice of the Peace Maxie Eaves. Howard was transported to a Center hospital for treatment of his injuries and later released.
Baker-Kennedy was not injured in the crash, according to the press release.
The accident is still under investigation.
