ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A former Angelina County inmate died at a Lufkin hospital Monday morning due to health complications.
Vernon Sparkman, 54, of Lufkin, was arrested on Jan. 15 on five charges including parole violation and possession of drugs.
According to Sheriff Greg Sanches, after conducting a medical assessment and speaking with Sparkman's family, the jail's medical staff discovered he had been ill.
Sanches said the jail's medical staff kept a close eye on Sparkman's during his time at the jail. However, on Jan. 22, Sparkman told the medical staff he was feeling worse and the sheriff's office transported him to CHI Memorial St. Luke's Hospital.
"I think our medical staff did a great job," said Sanches. "They followed protocol and took all the right precautions to make sure Sparkman got the best care available."
The sheriff's office released Sparkman into the custody of his family on Saturday.
Sparkman died around 2 A.M. on Monday morning. An autopsy has been ordered.
The sheriff's office is conducting an investigation into the official cause of his death.
